Every two years, the NFL Players Association releases the results of its polling of all League players who are asked to rank the NFL’s 31 stadium surfaces. In the most recent results (January 2007), the NFL’s players once again tabbed FieldTurf as the runaway leader among all artificial turf brands. While our turf and that of every other turf supplier has contained very small amounts of lead chromate, the lead is fully encapsulated, meaning that it is not likely to become bioavailable and harmful in the unlikely event it were to be ingested after playing on an artificial turf.

FieldTurf has always believed our polyethylene fiber fields to be safe, and when tested with the CDC and CPSC endorsed wipe test, our fields have uniformly registered lead levels well below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) strict limits.

Currently, FieldTurf is considered “lead free”, by U.S. government standards, and contains only a miniscule trace amount of lead. As an example, the allowable limit for children’s toys is 300 parts per million. Our newest generation of fibers test anywhere from “ND” (non detectable) to only 0.1 – 0.3 parts per million, 300x lower than what is allowed in children’s toys and other normal everyday household products and 400x lower than what is allowed in native soil and natural grass fields. Despite these extremely low levels, FieldTurf is leading the way and is the only turf company that has vowed to go to a 100% no lead fiber in the very near future.

Some key facts to consider about lead in artificial turf:
• Lead does not leach from synthetic turf.
• Bioavailability of lead from pigment is extremely low.
• Worker exposed to turf and particles for 30 years tests normal.
• Even assuming 50% bioavailability, the amount of ingested turf required to pose a risk is absurdly unrealistic as a 40 pound child would need to ingest approximately 100 pounds of turf for there to be any risk.

Also, recent reports surrounding high levels of lead in artificial turf may, on the surface, be alarming as many manufactures have indeed been cited for higher then acceptable levels of lead content.
